When you ordered yours, how much configuration did you get?

i.e. what size chainring were you able to specify I see on the specs it states 54T, but it would be unusual to only offer the one. Could you opt for different sprocket sizes? Would you have been able to order a small bike with a telescopic seat post for example? (Not that I want to, just curious.) And I also couldn't see on their website where you'd specify tyres.

So I managed to get a ride.

Unsurprisingly, they had a queue of people trying them out and I had to wait for the Large to come back into the store to try it.

In the meantime, I had a play with the small version.

Felt too small for me. But not comically so. Just sitting on it leant up against the wall, it felt like the standard seat post was almost correct. But the reach felt very small.

They did have a medium in stock. But the ‘display model’ was actually mounted on a display in the window so I couldn't ride it OR sit on it, despite being told I could.

The large felt too tall at the bars for me. Too upright. Bonus of it is that it did have the Conti tyres on it as I wanted to feel what they were like. They look just like massive versions of mine and i couldn't help but wonder if a thinner tyre exists that would fit.

The hub gears were great and the discs were a revelation. So was the fact it didn't rattle.

I rode down there on my bike, so put it up against the Large G-line to compare. Seat height from the floor was almost bang on identical, but the bars of the G-line were probably 2" higher. More akin to the old-school M-type. This might suit some people, but not me. The reach was a little longer than mine, but only fractionally - however, they did the typical Brompton thing of putting saddle quite far forward on the rails. So I figure being able to play around and put the seat back a bit would be worthwhile.

I did try putting my bike up against the medium in the window, but it was a bit hard to do. I reckon it was slightly nearer to the geometry on my bike. I was hoping the reach would be slightly longer than mine as I could do with being slightly more stretched out.

On the road it did feel good to ride, but it's noticeably heavier to move around when folding and unfolding. You'd get used to it, but that's a lot of extra weight to swing under to fold.

I think I'd need a longer ride on the medium to see if i could make it work. And I'd need to do it at a friendly dealer that might let me move stuff about.

They only had the Orange and the white (whatever they're calling that). I quite liked the orange, but as an owner of a powder coated lime green version, I know those bright colours seem to attract the dirt in London and the powder coat makes it difficult to remove. From the online pics, I prefer the look of the green, but again would have to see.

Ultimately, I was a little disappointed. I wanted to really love it, I had visions of me taking up my pre-order slot immediately, but left feeling a bit 'meh'.

Are you a muscular and heavy chap, Kell? Did the frame feel stiffer and less flexi than the smaller models?

Muscular? Not any more.

But currently at about 16 1/2 stone.

I believe the new bike is rated to 130kg (IIRC).

Hard to say. I've kind of got over the way my current bike feels so I don't find it that flexi.

New one felt solid, but how much of that was just down to 'new bike feeling' I don't know.

As an owner of AN Other 20" folder, the tyres were of interest- Schwalbe G-One Allround, which are most excellent and not previously available in 406. Can you buy them from anyone other than Brompton (or, presumably, dealers)? No. Idiotic enough, given how many other bikes and trikes could suit them. And then there's the price. 700Cs can be had for £35, from many retailers (35mm, 40mm, black or tan sidewall, all four variations that one price). The Brompton 'exclusive' : £60. Greedy, nothing else.

Didn’t ask to be honest. Medium suited me as is and I knew I wanted the G One tyres. Am sure once there is enough stock a dealer will swap out bits for you. I did that when purchasing my chp3 as I only needed a std seat post and not the extended that it came with as stock

I haven’t seen them for sale anywhere as yet but yes £60 is taking the Michael… although I understand Brompton had them made specially with Schwalbe so there is going to be an element of investment coverage. 700’s will be sold in way higher numbers so lower price makes sense. Given how good a tyre they are I’m actually surprised you can get them for c£30 when you pay a lot more for many tyres these days. Am sure price will drop if Schwalbe opens them up beyond just being Brompton exclusive (if they aren’t already)

There are actually three G-One Allround versions with different compounds and protection levels, not available in all sizes, though it's not clear which the Brompton version is. Most are the RaceGuard 'Performance Line' (cheaper, pretty sure I have those but Schwalbe's numbering etc is not always clear), or Super Ground 'Evolution Line'. If they're the latter, they're generally about £15-20/€20 more expensive and they're not actually extracting that much urine (though Dolan have those at £40, generally more like £50, eg Halfords).

I’ll have a proper look at the bike tomorrow and see if I can work out which it is!

My eyes water when I see the prices of anything Brompton related, and now its gone to a whole new level with the 20" wheeled version.
Man, you gotta have deep pockets to go down that path.

Managed to get out for a first reasonable ride today. c20 miles and I could have easily carried on much further. Supremely comfortable and a totally different bike to the std 16 inch. Bars were initially pointing up towards me which felt way too cramped so stopped and moved everything around on the fly after a few miles. Now pointing up and away and much better - nice roomy feel. All seems to work really well and I threw in a mile or so of local gravel track which it coped with very well.

New Brompton grips with the extended palm support I don't like. They're just too squishy so will be swapped out for some Ergon's that I already have going spare which I know are much better.

Very happy so far and gives me confidence to know I can travel with the bike and do some serious distance rides without worry.

A great looking bike in my favourite colour combination 😎
Any chance you could measure the folded dimension? I did look on the Brompton website but couldn't find it.

According to Brilliant Bikes in their video it’s 71cm by 68cm by 38cm. Visually it’s the width that I find more noticeable when compared to a 16 inch version.

As you have moved the 'bars, does it still fold fully? Not that I'm considering buying one, but I'm just curious (or so people say  )

lol - yep, in fact now folds slightly more compactly. The original bar orientation actually stuck out a little further once folded, but now the rise of the bars is more in line with the fold. In hindsight I should have measured the folded width before and after but now can’t be arsed to move the bars twice! Reckon it’s a cm or two in my favour now though
