All closed round me and turned into mini markets (Londis and the like) , except one which closed and has reopehttps://www.epilepsy.org.uk/info/photosensitive-epilepsy/computer-television-screensned as a rather smart pub/restaurant.
. "near you" would be the appropriate phrase, unless you live rural Sale? I am sure if you didn't you could get to one without to much trouble. There is only one bus a week here but thinking of using it for night in town, although I have been saying that for years! Taxi back 8 miles is affordable.

There are pubs in pubs in Sale, although I live closer to Altrincham than Sale centre. My point was that all my "local" pubs are closing.

Pretty decent pubs around here if all types.
The Whiippet likes to walk across the fields to the next village for the posh gastro-pub ... apparently the ale and ambience is more to his taste ...

Point to note - unless you know your dogs, don't say "pitbull" when reporting something to the police unless you know it is.

A "pitbull" is a banned 'dangerous' breed and so the police would hold off attending until a trained dog handler was with you too, or in extreme circumstances a firearms officer. Both types of officer are rarer than hens teeth and you will have a wait.

If it's a staffy, which it generally is, say so and you'll get a quicker response!

And before anyone says it, it's not my policy, and yes I know it's stupid. I've met many a pitbull I'd introduce to my children, and many 'legal' breeds I wouldn't.

So, if you know the correct breed, say it, if you don't, say "(small/big brown/black/white) dog".

I live opposite a 'Flat Roof Pub' but once you get out in the countryside (Leicestershire,Derbyshire And Rutland) there are still some cracking pubs to ride to and the price is so high that 2 tends to be my lot so no probs coming home.

Pubs using a flat roof were one of the first chains, or at least pubs of a similar design, built by Whitbread in many parts of the country.

Many were built on council housing estates and all used a bird as their name - Mallard, Moorhen, Raven, Eagle, Falcon, etc.

The flat roof was used over the bar area because they wanted more room downstairs than up.

A lot are now shut/demolished/renamed, but if you look around a council or 60/70s estate in your area, you may still see one, or the remnants of one.

This pic is of the Mallard, in Seaham, County Durham.

Not very often - they emptied the pubs of us alcoholic smokers which drained the life from them.

Myth: It will be bad for pubs
Pro smoking groups claimed that the smokefree legislation would be bad for business and would lead to many pubs closing down. The evidence to date from notable pub groups is that the smoking ban has had 'little impact' upon their sales. Capital Pubs announced profits and that the 'smoking ban has had no material impact on business'. Greene King said like-for-like sales were up by 2% in managed houses and 1% in tenanted pubs. Punch Tavern shares rose by 2.3% and announced the smoking ban as having 'little impact upon sales'. Mitchells & Butler announced that the smoking ban has not affected UK sales with like-for-like sales increasing by 2.6 per cent. Furthermore a recent YouGov survey commissioned by ASH found that 20% of non-smokers reported that they visited pubs more often since the smoking ban. Source of the claim: Freedom2choose:

I think the recession in 2008 did for more pubs than the smoking ban , and if managed properly a good pub will attract custom.

Could be all but identical, there were a finite number of different designs.

A lot of the 'bird pubs' became run down and acquired a bad name for drunken yobbery, so you will see some that have been renamed to distance the pub from its past.

My guess would be The Grandstand is one of those.

Edit: The Shoemakers just posted by @raleighnut could be another renaming job.

funnily enough the "Bird pub" in the same town is called the parrot and is 100 yds further down the road. it has a slate roof as it is a lovely victorian building.

the grandstand was rebuilt in the 60s/70s as the area was "developed " the old pub was a " tramdoor" where the tramway horse handlers would run ahead and get a quick pint in before the horses arrived up the slope.

and in the 80s/90s had a upstairs built on one side and a pitched roof put on
