Pubs in Oxford

Cycling Watford to Oxford tommorow, it's the first proper ride of the year as I've been pretty lazy over winter. Anyhow will be stopping the night and wonder what there is by way of entertainment as I'll be on my own.

Any suggestions on good places for a pint? Either decent beer or somewhere with a band on (thinking open mic night/pub band, free or few quid entrance fee, not bothered about what just something to watch).

(notice there's a couple fo weatherspoons in town, will prolly pop in there and see what they've got on tap as it's their beer festival this week).

Well I like The Three Goats Heads on St Michaels, Sammy Smiths pub. For music we used to go to The Jericho Tavern although I haven't been there for a while, was a good pub though. There's loads more.

The Head of the River is good for outdoor drinks by the river on a nicer day.

Well I like The Three Goats Heads on St Michaels, Sammy Smiths pub. For music we used to go to The Jericho Tavern although I haven't been there for a while, was a good pub though. There's loads more.

Second the Jericho Tavern and it's an interesting part of town. The Big-Bang Sausage place nearby often has live Jazz and is often the fuelling/meeting place for Friday Night rides to London with yacf.
For top beer and studenty fabness I would recommend th Kings Arms on Broad Street (Pint of Youngs Ordinary please) or just tucked-away by the nearby Bridge of Sighs is the renowned Turf Tavern.
The 'Spoons pub in George street is OK, but that part of town can get a tad more lairy of a night, but generally it's OK.

The Jericho area used to be home to many many good pubs. A lot of them are no more and I daresay others have changed hands even since I lived there, but as of 8 years ago the Harcourt Arms and the Bookbinders were both very nice. The Jericho Tavern has really picked up since it stopped being a Scream pub

I used to live in Jericho in the 90's, good pubs there then.
Go to the Turf Tavern, nice sitting outside when the weather is nice.

Agree with Turf, an Oxford essential, but the Eagle and Child (Holst/CS Lewis) on the LHS of St Giles going away from Oxford (opposite the L&F) is I reckon better than the Lamb and Flag from a beer/interest viewpoint, but it's a tough choice, so do both and report back!!

Nostalgia for me I'm afraid. The Lamb and Flag was our sixth form pub of choice on a Saturday night, and I used to spend my pocket money on Ushers Directors bitter in there. Mind you, that was in 1981

It was indeed, we were the post-punk sixth formers mostly wearing suits and overcoats in the bay window to the left of the door as you came in. Fantastic fun. I seem to remember the bar was enormously long and stretched down the side of the pub towards the bogs at the back. Life got more interesting the further towards the back you got. What a place!

You were in the posh bit! That was our favourite haunt in Oxford for a while - good fun!

the trout is nice, just outside oxford, or the catherine wheel or kings head in sandford, nr oxford, or rosie o'grady's (the tap room is cool, very retro), if its still there.
