Pump for 120psi?

I'm currently using this http://www.wiggle.co.uk/topeak-micro-rocket-al-pump/
Which claims 160 psi but it won't do it.
But it can, in theory. The max pressure quoted for a pump is what it can handle before it blows apart, it has nothing to do with how much air you can actually put into the tyre.

Though manufacturers and retailers do nothing to disillusion you on that fact, you only find out when you eventually get somewhere near 60psi and need an arm transplant.

Can't you find room for a Topeak road morph?

That will very definitely go up to 120psi.

I have two - one is on a bike with 120psi tyres.

My Topeak Pocket Rocket will do 120psi. I tested it when I first got it by pumping a 23c road tyre up until it felt at least as hard as the one already inflated to 110-120psi with a Joe Blow track pump. I then fitted the Joe Blow to the mini-pump inflated tyre and with one stroke that was needed to open the valve and check the pressure it showed that it was indeed at the required 120psi. It wasn't particularly hard physically to get there and I am confident it would have gone close to the 160psi advertised max pressure if I had continued pumping.

Pocket Rocket can be had for £11 from CRC at the moment and will do presta and Schrader (just checked mine earlier tonight after lots of stories on this forum about pumps failing at the critical moment! My pump is still working perfectly after approx 5yrs although I admit swapping to Schrader is a bit fiddly.)

Definitely a capable, reliable, robust and miniscule pump that comes with a bottle cage mount so can be kept discreetly on the bike at all times.

I've had a pocket rocket but it failed on me so I've not used it since.

I don't get why you want to ditch the CO2 - the CO2 is the surefire way to get to 120 psi.

I have a Topeak Race Rocket HPX, get to 120psi with no problem. It's small, light and comes with a neat little mounting bracket.

Thanks Colin,
I've had loads of problems in the past with pinch flats and anything less than 120 in the back tyre I'm not so confident.
I probably get 80psi at the moment which usually gets me home but I'd feel like abandoning a long ride.
I suppose if I could get to 110 psi it would be OK.
I think I have had no more than 3 or 4 pinch flats in over 10 years and that includes years when I weighed about 17 stone/238 lbs/108 kg. I have been using only 85-100 psi pressure in my tyres for local descents on which I sometimes exceed 50 mph/80 kph.

The road surfaces round here can be pretty bad so I doubt that yours are much worse. Perhaps you need to get better at reading the road ahead of you! :okay:

Oh, and being able to bunnyhop your bike can save you from unexpected threats such as the time that a big piece of timber fell off a skip wagon directly in front of me.

I can bunny hop if needed perhaps I do miss stuff but I do know when I went up to 120 no more pinch flats so I'd like to keep it there if poss

I also have the Lezyne linked to by IanR. I thought it was an excellent pump until i borrowed a fellow rider's Zefal HPX.

The Lezyne now feels average.

That's what I use and it definitely gets me 110psi without any trouble so I am sure it will do 120psi if that's what you need.

It's too big for a jersey pocket. I attach it to the underside of my toptube. It comes with a bracket to attach it with Velcro strap to hold the pump in place. It is a very effective system

The smaller the pump the less likely it will reach that pressure regardless of what the packaging promises it can reach, plus it will take an ungodly amount of strokes to get to say 75. I've only found three mini pumps (there may be one other that I don't know about) that will get past 100 most won't go pass 80. The Lezyne Road Drive, and the Topeak Race Rocket HPX, the third is no longer made is a SKS Wese Carbon. The Topeak Mini Morph is the odd one out since I've never used one but I do have the full size Morph and that one is easy to get to 100 and beyond, so perhaps the Mini Morph might as well get past 100.

I think of the two pumps I mentioned that are still being sold the Lezyne is the better one over the Topeak because it takes about 50 more strokes for the Topeak to get to 100 with more physical effort as well, but it is a good pump I just think the Lezyne is better. The Lezyne Road Drive comes in three sizes, small, medium, and large, get only the large, anything smaller will take a lot more strokes and effort and the small one I doubt will get to 100.

I've actually blown pumps trying to get past 80 not alone trying to go past 100! I went into a bike shop once and asked for their best mini that could reach 110, they showed me one that was the most expensive one they had rated to hit 160, so I asked them to show me that it could reach 110 and I would buy it, the mechanic got to about 75 and gave up!
