My LG has just broken again, it has already gone back to the manufacturer once and now has the same fault once more, and it is three months old.

Not that I would want to influence anyone's buying decision, just saying my LG has broken twice in three months.

We have a humax that worked fine to begin with but lately it has the same problems described above.

I thought it might be because we have been tight and are still using an analogue aerial and thus getting a signal too weak for the box to pick up the essential programming prompts. Does that sound feasible?

It really depends which transmitter you use which channels (ie frequencies) and so on. You may need a amplified extra-hi gain but these tend to be installed at many more properties than need them. A properly set up yagi aerial should work fine for Emley Moor. If you want advice the website wolfbane will give it if you type in your postcode. If you're using an indoor aerial though that's a different matter.

Often problems are damp getting in the cable or it being blown off course a bit.

Oh, flipping typical - after over 2 years of reliable performance, I mention my PVR on here and then discover that it has corrupted some recent recordings! All before are still ok, and a couple since, so it could well be that the HDD is on the way out.

I stayed up to watch it perform its regular disk check at 03:00, which it passed, but something is definitely wrong. I'm just wondering if we had any power fluctuations when I made those recordings, but I do suspect the disk. If I have to replace it, I will check if I can put a bigger one in place of the current 160 GB model, though I have never gone beyond 80% on that.

Just look at it as doing you a favour colin and forcing you to go and have a proper life instead

I don't know how you cope with that amount of excitement Colin ;)
I had already noticed that there was a problem ... I wasn't watching it for fun!

I was about to go to sleep, and then remembered that the machine tests itself in the middle of the night unless it happens to be recording something at the time.

I'll check it again in a minute, to see if the disk check fixed any bad clusters. (It didn't mention finding any problems at the time though.)

I'm just about to list one, I've replaced it with a Humax FreeSat one.

Don't know, but these chaps might: http://myhumax.org/forum/ I've found them very helpful in the past.

Nope - still dodgy.

Damn ... that has raised the question of unreliability, which I don't want when recording things that I really want to watch. It so happens that the 3 duff recordings so far happen to be things that I am not too bothered about, and programmes that I do want to watch seem to be okay. Well, they start playing, unlike the 3 in question; whether they play all the way through without any problems will only become apparent when I try to watch them.
We had a Humax which was utterly crap, forever freezing and locking up, and the cold reboot took about 10 minutes, one of the most frustrating pieces of crap I have ever owned. It's the only device I have ever took outside and beat the ***k out of it with a sledge hammer.

We replaced it about 4 years ago with a Sagem, it has nearly been faultless, very occasionally on playback the sound and the picture goes slightly out of sinc, easily cured with a quick stop start.

Ours is 80gb which we have never come close to filling.

Make sure you get one with a dual head, record to channels at the same time, or record one channel whilst playing another back. Make sure it will pause live tv, best feature ever. start watching itv 15 minutes at 9:15, skip the ads and catch before the news!
I've got a Humax that belonged to a friend. It's now about 9 years old and while it freezes very occasionally now, it's to be expected given its age.

However, the guy who used to own it DID have some problems when he very first got it, not disimilar to what you mention. However a software update was released for it and he never had another problem. Did you get an update for yours?
