Hi,

I recently bought a used frame and fork cheap on ebay. The alu frame was described as scratched and chipped - which it is - but I'm planning on sand-blasting and repainting/coating.

However, there are some odd marks on the top of the carbon forks - best described as looking like rust bubbles under paint (though of course, it's carbon).

I've attached a photo.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what it is - and specifically, if it compromises the forks? I knew I was buying a tatty but usable frame - so tatty and usable forks would be fine too.

Also, the steerer is a bit scraped up at the bottom. I've yet to put an ahead headset together, so I don't know if this will be an issue with fixing in the bearings. Any thoughts on that would be useful too.

Thanks...

Looks like a dodgy repair to me with some sort of resin. I may well be talking bollocks of course, but in view of the consequences of fork failure I'd be minded to dump them and look for a cheap replacement, carbon or steel.

I agree with Smoking Joe - looks very suspect and I'd certainly not risk my life using a fork as illustrated in the pics until I'd had an expert look at it. I'd try these guys as a starter My link Plus read through the FAQ My link

I took it around a couple of LBSes and they both said it was corrosion on the alloy crown next to where it bonds with the carbon fibre (probably from gunk caught up from mud-guards.

Neither could say whether they were ridable or not (covering there backsides I guess and who can blame them) as the bonding COULD be compromised. Think it's time to look for another pair...
