Question about trains.

I quite like travelling by train, and have done a couple of cycle tours that involved getting to the start of my ride by train.

What I don't like is the faff of changing trains when I've got the bike - this adds alot of stress, especially if you're using to diffeent companies who may have different rules about bike carriage.

What I wondered is, is there some easy way to ascertain where I can get to directly from my local station? A map or something showing all direct lines out of Sheffield?

I'd do a google search, but I'm not entirely sure what terms to use. I tried looking at Northern Rails route map, but it shows alll trains for the whole network, it's not easy to see where services terminate.

ts quite helpful, but what I'm really looking for is a map that I could see at a glance where the lines go.

I think you'll struggle to find a map or catalogue of stations served without change from Sheffield.

However using a bit of rail knowledge straightforward links with through services at least alternate hours are:

• Midland main line towards London calling Derby, Leicester then possibly Kettering/Wellyboro/Bedford/Luton
• Cross Country North - via Leeds or Doncaster to York/Darlington/Durham/Newcastle and Edinburgh then Glasgow or Aberdeen(?)
• Cross Country South - Derby/Birmingham/Cheltenham/Gloucester/Bristol and on to Devon & Cornwall
• via Hope Valley to Peak District then Manchester and Liverpool
• via York to Scarborough
• via Doncaster to Hull and Bridlington
• via Worksop and Retford to Lincoln
• via Donny and Scunthorpe to Grimsby/Cleethorpes
• via Barnsley to Huddersfield

Stopping points may vary but can be viewed for each service via the 'additional info' icon on booking services such as http://www.londonmidland.com/
A single change at Leeds opens up other alternatives such as Ilkley and Dales or via Skipton to Settle and Carlisle through Northern Pennines.

Think I got Scarboro' via York wrong. Through trains operate via Hull, Bridlington and Filey and take 3hrs but stop at nice places like Beverley along the way.

TPE operate between York & Scarborough, but not between York & Sheffield. You're correct, it is the Northern service via Hull & Brid that goes from Sheffield to Scarborough

From Sheffield you could get to the start of the WOTR in Morecambe with 1 change (Leeds) & return from the finish in Brid to Sheffield on a direct service

You can get to Manchester(wash my mouth out) from Sheffield on Northern Rail. There's also a service that will get you to Leeds, the long way round, although its a direct service.
At Leeds if your headed for Ilkley or Skipton, you'd be moving from Platforms14-16 to platforms 1-6. Not as bad is sounds 1-6 all being on the same platform.
