There was also a Florin, two shillings.

12 pennies in a shilling 20 shillings in a pound, 240 pennies in a pound. Guineas too, if you kept the right company, which were 21 shillings.
farthings being a quater penny, and halfpennies, (ha'pennies)

Sums at school were interesting:

You buy 7 Items at £3.11s.71/2d and 16 items and £1.4s.3d and 6 items and £9.15s.113/4d.
How much did you spend ?
If the shopkeeper gave you a 3% discount how much would you save?

How did we manage? I'd struggle to do it now.

Edit: Pennies were denoted with a 'd'. Something to do with Latin I suppose.

Sounds like you've been listening to Simon Mayo - he's just had a chap on talking about farthings, thr'penny bits, guineas, etc.

My dentist gave me a crown last month.

I dare say you gave him five hundred quid in return !

i read somewhere , many moons ago, That the introduction of the Florin was the first attempt to decimalise Sterling, it being One tenth of a pound
historically we had had the following coins in circulation (all old cuurency)
1/4 farthing ( Yep 1/16th of an old penny )
1/3 farthing
Half farthing
Farthing
Halfpenny
penny
two pence
three pence ( Joey or Thruppeny bit)
Fourpence (Groat)
Sixpence (Tanner)
Shilling (12d , a "bob")
Florin (2 shillings )
Half a crown (2 shillings and sixpence)
A Soveriegn was a pound and a guinea was initially a pound but as it was gold the value actually fluctuated although prices quoted in guineas ( horse racing still does it) refers to one pound and one shilling (1.05)
Notes not in existance now, 10 shilling, One pound and big white Fivers

Are you sure there was a two pence coin ?
