They don't buy tools every week, the Snap On man comes round for money, as the mechanics buy tools on the never, never, as they're so expensive, and the Snap On Man hopes to sell them something else too, that's why all the mechanics hide when he turns up!
Edit: Just to give you an idea of cost

Now you know why it costs so much to service/repair cars

I hear Snap On’s very first customer retired recently. Shame, really. He’d almost finished paying for that screwdriver, too.

I have never had the need to use them but I am with Accy in asking why do people pay crazy prices for basic products ? I dont suggest they buy Chinese throw away junk but surely a medium priced spanner will do a good job ,?

There's one here for £4.99! Surely it'll be the same quality as the £407 one!😁
Putentfun 46PCS 1/4" Drive Socket Wrench Set With Ratchet, Bit Socket, Metric and Extension Bar for DIY, Car Repair and Household - Storage Case Included : Amazon.co.uk: DIY & Tools https://share.google/7k4Zsabx4sQSRozZ5

My Uncle and his son were mechanics

They had tools that were used every day and lasted decades

a DIY person might use the same tools a few times a month if they are keen

the difference is massive from what I heard

My Uncle also kept a few older or cheaper spanners and the like around for "special purposes"
I saw that in action once when a nut on my Fiesta became rounded due to the use of cheap tools
he put an old cheap spanner on top of it and persuaded it to fit by the use of a large hammer!!!!

it did work - but we did need a new nut after!!!

The other problem is that manufacturers keep making things - especially on cars - that need a specific tool or a normal tools but with a handle a weird shape to get to the place it needs to me

so in order to be able to keep up to date they keep needing new tools
I have heard that they sometimes patent/copyright these - and when they drop out of protection other people start making them and if they are for a common car then garages buy them

it is all far more complicated than I thought - and is costing me a LOT due to a weird thing with my car that only a Honda garage can do as it needs a weird tool!

Snap -on...............Lifetime guarantee..................If you break something they replace it. Plus the guy comes round each week.

Most pro mechanics own 7-10 K+ of hand tools

When my Uncle retired he got a new set of tools

He reckoned that when he started he had a complete set of all standard tools

that all got nicked over his first few years

so he "was entitled" to a replacement
and as he was - and had been - the manager for the workshops of all the country parks and the like then his word was good enough!!

to be fair he was never the subtle gentle type of mechanic that dealt with gauges measuring pressure and force to the nearest micro Newton ( or whatever)

so there is a good chance that he broke a fiar few in his time

but then he spent most of his working life working on tractors and mowers and things like that

mind you - if you wanted an old car to drive again he was the guy that would do it
and stuck nuts were the sort of thing that he always had a tool for - often involving a hammer!

This, when you look at what a pro mechanic has, the cheaper stuff would do the job, for a short while, where as Snap On gear will last a lifetime, unless it gets nicked, we get the better end of "Cheaper" stuff at work, it doesn't last, for example, I have a 3/4" breaker bar, that I snapped the pivot point of the drive end clean off, I doubt a Snap On one would do that.

If it did then next time he came round you'd return it and get a new un.
