I carry a pair in my saddle bag just in case but when I'm changing the chain at home, I prefer to use a pin. Lot less fiddly and I've got more confidence in the fitting of it

Might go back to my dad's method, using a punch, hammer and pliers!

Ime, you'll get far more 'failures' with connecting pins than quick links (which, btw, are called 'quick links' because they are both quick and an effective way to link a chain). Connecting pins carry higher risk except for very capable users - perhaps you are one of those? In which case: hurrah!
Me, capable ! thats the first time l have seen those words even approaching close proximity ^_^
