Just read the article and although slightly worrying, this is done in test conditions with a constant wind speed in a fixed direction. We all know out on the open road, the wind varies in both direction and velocity, plus you are always turning your head slightly so that the effect is minimised. If it was all that bad, would you be able to hear cars approaching? I agree it can be an issue sometimes but generally only when the wind is head on and strong. I like the look of the pads you can add on the to the helmet straps but I'm sure there is something I could knock up myself for a fraction of the cost. I've just bought a new helmet as per link below, I like the fact that the side straps have a small "loop" which goes under your ear, the V shaped ones used to dig in to me.

My sister in law once gave me a very lightweight disposable cagoule when we were caught in a downpour on a ride.

The volume of the wind racket took me by surprise and was very unpleasant.

The garment was, of course, designed for walking in the rain, not riding in it.
