You'll need a minimum of a BC Silver licence in order to race in open races. A cheaper option is the TLI http://scottish-tli.com/4597.html?*session*id*key*=*session*id*val* which gives you a licence for about £16. There's plenty of races in Scotland.

I have been thinking about entering some TLI events this year. A bit nervous to be honest that I don't make a fool of myself, not sure if I am up to the pace

If you can hack the pace in a decent club ride, you should be able to complete a TLI race without too much pain. Give it a shot, you never know...

I've never seen anything other than understanding and support for slower riders (unless they are dangerous in a group) from anyone.

Apart from my son, who's quite dismissive towards my suffering.
