Rail companies charging a fee for bikes

I personally wouldn’t mind a couple of pounds to take my bike on a train, provided the space was fit for purpose, free of oversized suitcases and reserved.

and guaranteed!
I have come across too many people saying they booked a space but when they got there the "bike space" was full of cases
so they were told they couldn;t travel with their bike as there was no room!

Cross Country and Grand Central are now the same, both owned by Arriva.
Saying that, at least they do allow bikes, unlike the similar Lumo.

So they will be the only two charging the £1.
