I've always commuted in the rain but I never used to purposely go out in it for a leisure ride if it was heavy (never minded quite so much if it started raining whilst I was out).

However over the last year i've learned a few things that have changed my view and I will now head out in the rain on a Saturday or Sunday if it's been pre-planned. These are:

1.) Disc brakes are so much better than road or canti brakes and I now never feel as though i've a chance of getting killed due to the weather.

2.) Having quality kit makes all the difference. Having clothing that is waterproof and breathable costs but makes the world of difference.

3.) Anti fog treatment for glasses. Fogging of my glasses probably used to concern me me more than anything especially on my journey home from work in heavy traffic. I'd stop at the lights, glasses would fog up and it'd take me 30m of cycling "blind" before they cleared.

I treated myself to a very good quality waterproof jacket about 6 weeks ago and typically it never rained for about 2 weeks after that so couldn't test it out. I would be sitting in work looking out of the window hoping it would start raining. I've had plenty of opportunity to test it out since mind.

Wind on the other hand, I absolutely detest, and wouldn't choose to ride for fun in it.
