the front mech on my trusty old hard tail mtb is rattling, and is loose if wiggled. it still changes ok, so is it buggered or just 'elderly' (shimano alvio bought in 2001)?

Loose, rattly ? I think we need a few more details as to which bits are loose with respect to which other bits.
OTH - if it still works, and it doesnt sound like it owes you anything.... just carry on until it fails completely, but carry a screwdriver so you can lock it out in the middle ring with the limit screws as a "get-you-home" measure.

it's the cage bit that's a bit loose. can't see anything obvious to tighten up…
