Re-proofing - what do you use?

As the thread suggests, I've never bothered with re-proofing my jackets. I probably should. I have a range of jackets, from a super-lightweight shower proof jobbie from Decathlon, a Gore Path (Paclite Shell), a Montane featherweight, and a couple of heavier Altura jackets (one is a Night Vision).

Is there one product that is suitable for all these? Wash in, or spray on? Should I treat the Gore separately (it's my favourite and the one that works best for me so I don't want to ruin it).

I've seen this referenced on another thread - any thoughts on it?

What's your experience?

I use Nik-Wax for my motorbike stuff (never bothered with cycling gear since I've never found any of it to be truly waterproof in the first place). The wash in stuff works well, but be warned - you need to do a hot cycle in the empty machine afterwards, otherwise the NikWax will cling to the drum for months!

Edit... The "Tech wash" stuff in your link doesn't re-proof; it just washes stuff without washing out the existing proofing. To re-proof you would be better using the "TX Direct" as advertised in your link.

Nik Wax here too. Use it on my Keela search and rescue jacket, very effective.

I use Nikwax. Wash first with Tech Wash and then again with TX Direct. A bit like rechargeable batteries, waterproof gear has a limited life but I find its extended nicely with Nikwax.

Never use biological washing detergent on your cycling gear.

Total waste of time, every time I do it.

It's just habit now...I must try to stop but it just "feels" like the right thing to do.

If you use biological stuff it destroys the waterproof. If you use non-bio it protects it. You can still get cheap non-bio.

I have an old, patched Sprayway Goretex cycling jacket, probably getting on for 20 years old and thinking it owed me nothing I soaked it in Thompson's water Seal. It was a bit stiff for a while but now the jacket is as waterproof as ever and refuses to die.
