how wide is your definition of reality tv? Does it include all television that shows 'real people'?

I was using it to encompas shows that use the public to vote on the outcome. Shows such as Big Brother, American Idol, X Factor and the others that have graced our screens.

The clip shows like You've been Framed, various police chasing ones & those that look at Youtube clips are borderline, but as they do not involve any real emotional attachment for any of the audience I was not including them.

I see - well, in that case I'd say that 'Strictly....' fulfills the Reithian purposes of educating, entertaining and informing. Which can't be bad.

yes, and sorry but I thought it was trivial.

My view is that the country producing the best films in the last decade was............Iran. Films that are political, films that are feminist, films that are about Kurdish people. And, while it makes Iran a more interesting place to people like me, it doesn't stop people getting beat up and murdered for demonstrating. That isn't to say that Iranian films are not without political effect - they are, but you have to admit that the effect isn't great, for all the genius of the film-makers and the power of the films. So I don't think for a second that the political effect of people sending text messages is going to be any better. All societies have their little contradiction, and this is just one of many.

What I found a bit off-putting about the speaker (apart from the microphone and the staring eyes) was her inability to get the thing in proportion.

I agree you - except about Strictly
Surely the worst blight ever on our screens

I almost get possessed by SimonCC when it's on - he must be spontaneously combusting at the licence fee being wasted on such bilge

Reality tv means that traffic is quieter on Saturday night, so you can have a nice peaceful cycle on non-gale force wind nights.

I agree with the whole 'bread and circuses' thing helping to stop people fighting and I don't see anything inherently wrong with 'reality' TV in principal. It generally conforms to the consensus culture of the day though so in this country we're stuffed!

the great thing about reality TV is that while mrs LFG is glued to it, i can spend time on here.

otherwise most of it is pretty ordinary.
the greater thing about reality tv is that Mrs Dellzeqq earns her living from it
