Rear panniers on the front?

I have just fitted a Surly Nice front rack to my bike. It took a while (that's another story though!) but it looks the business and I'm pleased with. Seems rock solid.

My intention had been to use some old Altura rear panniers I have (possibly Orkney's, maybe only 12 or 15 litres) on the front. They fit just fine in both upper and lower positions on the Surly rack so I can't see a reason why I shouldn't use them, so long as I don't go overloading them.

What says you seasoned tourers?

I don't see why not if they fit and the bike handles okay.

p.s. Nice to see you back, Yello.

The main problem with large panniers on front low mountings is lack of ground clearance. Check that they clear a standard kerb before using them in the low position.

Good point. Will do. They should be okay as they're small panniers but that's exactly the type of advice I was looking for. Cheers!
