Barnet,
I was in Swansea at the time of her death, For the funeral I was best man at my friends wedding that day. Trying to get to Watford for the wedding was difficult as all roads near to the M1 were crowded with people tying to see the funeral cortege making it's way north.

I'd been to a MegaDog all-nighter as part of Morecambe's WOMAD festival... it was brilliant, Adam F on top form (he's Alvin Stardust's son)... arrived home around 6am to relentless media parroting of the BIG story... I turned off the TV and radio for a couple of weeks just to avoid turning into shouty ranty man... I had a fair bit of respect for Diana, her death was truly tragic, but the media frenzy was shameful, and as for Elton bloody John... may we all forget your name and your music, you fecking vulture!

I had had a domestic the night before with my boyfriend at the time and i remember it was hot and i couldn't sleep so i got up early and went for a run, i was younger and fitter then, along Eastbourne seafront where i lived at the time.
3/4 of the way along i ran past one of the newspaper stands and saw the newsagent putting up the paper ads with "Diana dead" on them. I remember thinking how sick and the usual "no news in the summer" had sunk to a particular low.

When i got in i made a cup of tea, turned the TV on and there it was. Im not sure anything else happened that day.

I remember waking up and turning the radio on and hearing sombre music. I knew straight away that a royal must have died, but thought it would have been The Queen Mother.

Actually, I was flying back to Gatwick with my girlfriend after two weeks in Greece. At the airport people were huddled round the telly in W H Smiths, and when we got the taxi home from Victoria all the flags along Whitehall were at half mast. I must admit I welled up a bit at her brother's speech.

No. Radio 2 definitely played Candle in the Wind! Also, ironically, at one point "Who's gonna drive you home?" by The Cars.

Candle in the Wind is the most annoying part of this for me.

I actually liked the track, and the connection to Marilyn Monroe made it evocative and moving

However he cheap change to the lyrics in order to move the tribute from Marilyn to Diana was execrable and also ruined the original song for me.

I was camping in Devon, and the local hysteria was appalling. Both local press and radio pillorying any shop that was not decorated mournfully enough or daring to open on the day of the funeral

I was out on a trekking holiday with my horse, a couple of friends and their horses. Camping wild and having a great time. We didn't find out until about 3 or 4 days later when we stopped at a horse friendly B&B - mostly to have a wash - one night.

I am not a huge fan of the royals, except for Princess Anne, I was pretty annoyed but the blanket news coverage and pictures of people crying in the streets. I cried in the street when my Gran died, I have never cried in the street for a stranger, however famous.

I was shocked, not at the news of her death, although I wished her no ill. But at the mass hysteria in the population. She was a rich girl who married a royal and died tragically after the break up of her marriage. Sad but not a disaster!

Pretty much this. Thankfully I was on my way to France that day for a week and so missed most of the hysteria. I find it weird that people still bang on about her.
