recommend me a book .....

so i may start my journey into bike DIY.
at the moment i can ....

remove either wheel
fix a puncture
remove/replace a tyre
flip the stem
mickle the chain
raise/lower the saddle

and that's about it (hides head in shame)

i want to be able to ....

change the cassette
fit a new chain
grease the hubs
remove the BB

and do all the bike maintenance myself. i know youtube is my friend, but when i'm 100 ft down the bottom of the garden,in my shed with my radio ..... would prefer an old fashioned book

A few months ago I picked up a copy of The Illustrated Bicycle Maintenance book by Todd Downs. ISBN 1-4050-8788-9
Loads of pictures, good clear text and covers lots of variations in equipment.

The other alternative is to find online instructions for the job in hand, print them off and take the printout to your shed. No worries about dirty fingermarks then!

Zinn and the art of road bike maintenance or Zinn and the art of mountain bike maintenance.

It has illustrations instead of photos which works really well in terms of showing the part you are working on very clearly. The text is quite humorous eg one of the vital elements of the toolkit is your noggin and there is a drawing of a brain.

I use it to read up in general terms then google the exact parts I am working on as Compo does.

There is nothing you can't find in regards to bike mechanics on You Tube.

My OH got me the Haynes book

All see if your lbs is doing any workshop. Mine do an after hours workshop with one on one guidance

Come round mine. You can do here over a cup of tea and a bit of guidance.

Are you sure? Ahh sweet man I recently bought the tools for it and the bb is still in the package. What am stuck on is what grease I should buy? in the basket was anti seize, I already have lithium grease.

By spring I hope to buy a new chainset and cassette (got the tools for this too!)

Lithium grease will be fine.
I have always used halfords cheapo grease with no problems.

Of course you are welcome round.

Get all the gear together, BB and cables and we will do all in one go.

Any tools I should buy? I need some allen keys and torque wrench ( this I know is hit and miss with some people - just recommended by the guy at my LBS who run the session)

Never needed a torque wrench.
I have all the tools needed.
