I'd reckon a decent 3 season is needed anywhere in Britain in 'summer'

Then consider if you want down or synthetic. Pack size and lightness will favour down but you must keep it dry. Ease of care and cost favours synthetic but normally the compromise is pack size and weight.The tent was £500 - I figure it's worth spending on something that could make trips more enjoyable. If you're saving on b&b costs in the long run then why not?

Interesting - I would be interested in any more feedback you might have now or in the future.Thanks for all the replies... In the end I was in a hurry and chose a pair of Vango Ultralite Pro 100s, which seemed light and small enough to go touring with. I recently used mine up a mountain with 4° overnight temps and they were warm enough for that.
