Getting one of these for my daughter, though she is much older. Need access to a laptop and maybe someone with a bit of tech ability if she gets stuck, though there are plenty of online guides around.

If she is interested in wildlife get her a bird box and put it up with her, its a bit of a delayed pleasure, but if it is full of activity in spring, then its a winner.

Art supplies.

A box of really decent colour pencils e.g. Faber Castell. Their Albrecht Durer range of watercolour pencils are very nice. IIRC the box of 12 should be around the £20 mark, as I bought one for a friend's (slightly older) daughter a couple of years ago.

Or how about a travelling box of 12 Winsor & Newton student (Cotman) watercolour half pans plus a couple of nice brushes (ProArte Polar are good) and a small pad of "postcard" NOT paper?

For both pencils & paint, you can then buy individual replacements from any decent art supplier, either bricks & mortar or online. And you can add to the selection later etc.

Er, why not? 🤔 Don't worry, I'm not suggesting he sends it via the Post Office or private courier.

If the child doesn't like or loses interest in the animal the parents are stuck with caring for it for years.

Bit out of left field, but when my daughters were that sort of age I got them swiss army knives. They loved them (not least for the implied trust - 'you're old enough now, so...') - and have used them ever since.

She does love Lego and probably has enough (if "enough" is a thing in the world of Lego)
She does get quite a bit of art material throughout the year
Don't think Mum would approve of a pet
