Hi,

I bought my bike on Sunday, and waddled out of the shop with an armful of bits, including a rear rack and a set of panniers, as I want to use the bike for local shopping trips rather than taking the car.

However, if I'm just out for a ride, and want to take say, my lock, a pump, keys, wallet etc, I'd rather have something smaller on the back rather than take one of the panniers.

Can anyone recommend a decent rear bag, please? The lock's pretty heavy, so I'd probably prefer something that attached to the rack rather than clipped onto the saddle post (I've no experience, but physics suggests that hanging something heavy off a small clip is likely to lead to a broken bracket sooner rather than later).

All advice gratefully received!

Cheers,

Boo

Plenty of rack packs out there - I've got an Altura one but there's loads of quality choices.

Does your lock not come with a thingy to attach it to the bike?

@vickster was saying that this was her best bike purchase ever (I think) and she buys a lot of bike stuff
+1 for the Topeak range, I've got 2 fixed racks and a beam rack (on different bikes, before someone starts) and 4 different size bags as well as my BIG Carradice panniers but the Topeak only really works as a system so if you don't have their rack they can be a fiddle to fit. Very good quality though, some of mine are 7-8 years old and still going strong.

Thanks.
Yes, it's (iirc) a Topeak rack. I'll look into their stuff.
Point taken about fixing the lock to the frame, but I really like the clean, uncluttered look of the bike, so I'm trying not to attach locks, pumps and whatnot to it.

Cheers!

Why not go for a bar bag that's big enough for the lock and is easy to remove from a fitting. Plus this would make the shopping trips easier/able to carry more shopping.

Forgive my ignorance...
What's a bar bag?
Is that a bag for the handlebars, or is it a bag that hangs off the crossbar?

Edit - Not to worry. Google to the rescue!

How big is the lock and what type is it? A slim rack bag may be your answer, I prefer to attach my d-lock and pump to the frame and have a seat post saddle bag for other bits and pieces.

Bungee the lock to the rack. Attach mini pump to frame under bottle cage. Rest in a seat post bag, job done

Otherwise, abus for example make a bracket that attaches to a rack, similar principle to the frame mount...but you need an abus lock

Topeak make good saddle bags, but in a range of sizes, so potter back to your lbs and look at the options. Medium one a decent compromise, small quite small, large quite large maybe

Plenty of stuff to think about!
I've probably spent quite enough for one month, so I might just see how I get on for a few weeks, and then idly drop in to the bike shop for a bit of browsing come next pay day.
Just browsing though!

Cheers!
