A quick google suggests Disston was a high quality American maker and their hand tools are now collectable.

I recall one benefit of a Disston saw was the blade was tapered slightly from top to bottom.

The cut was therefore slightly wider than the rest of the blade, making the saw less likely to snag when making deeper cuts.

For what it's worth, any good handsaw should have a tapered grind as you describe.
