Can't get to sleep so tried the cafe bit . I believe it would take you 3hrs 54mins to catch them back up or 48 miles . But I'm sleep deprived so I could be typing garbage

A question.
If I start cycling the 6.55 miles around Pitsford Reservoir with some friends who ride at 11.8 mph and I'm slightly faster than them at 12.3 mph, how long will it be before I lap them and how far will we have ridden?
And... if I stop at the cafe, 3 miles in, that then extends my ride by ¼ mile, and stop for 10 minutes for a coffee, at what point would I catch them up as they will have overtaken me by then.

You would lap them in 13.1 laps, or 85.805 miles. If you can manage that distance without a toilet break, you're a better man than I am. Incidentally, if you allow for toilet breaks it works in your favour. If the group stays together, when one stops for a slash they all stop. The group will have more toilet breaks than an individual rider, so you would catch them sooner.

After the cafe stop, you would catch them up 1 mile 476.7638311 yards into the ninth lap. That's a total distance of 53 miles 1180.763831 yards.

Maybe I'm taking this a bit too seriously

and maths after midnight was never a good idea, as my teacher used to say.

Do you stop for an ice cream in the car park by the causeway? Also how sunny and warm is it? That will determine the number of small cnildren, unleashed dogs and tandem hirers are present, all of which will work together to get in your way.

Also, how the hell did you get that dozy bunch at the cafe to serve you a coffee in under 10 minutes, you certainly didn't ask for a slice of cake either. Had you gone for a bacon buttie you nay be there now.

I may have walked around Pitsford water on several occasions.

I can't be arsed with the cafe stop but are you sure the first bit is right?

I make it 13.1 hours, not laps, for the OP to lap the others. And they would've posted 161.13 and 154.58 miles, respectively. Or 24.6 and 23.6 laps.

Are you both riding in the same direction?

Many answers, more questions

I can't doubt any of the answers as I don't have a clue

The ice cream van on the causeway is cheaper than the cafe but doesn't serve coffee.

We're riding in the same direction, if someone could work out how many laps it would take to meet at the starting point.

It's daytime and no p*nctures are planned. Backcasting fly fishermen and dogs on wander leads will be bunny hopped.

Bladder stops could alter the answer considerably, so I'll count them out.

And, yes, the time allocated for the cafe stop was a tad optimistic

I would expect my GCSE students to identify that the speed difference is 0.5 mph, and the amount of ground that has to be made up is 6.55 miles (one lap). Well most of them, anyway,

I'm not sure whether or not you're saying my numbers are wrong, and what do your students have to do with it?
