Removing links from KMC X9 chain???

I have a new KMC 9 speed chain to replace my worn Campag 9 on my mirage triple, I have also changed the middle chainring for a TA replacement and have a shiny new veloce cassette, the KMC chain is about 3 links longer than the old one and has also got one of these mising link joints. Simple I thought just use the same chain tool used to break the original campy chain and take out 3 links and bob's your auntie.

Except all I maanged to do was break the chain tool.

No bother with the campy chain but on this KMC one, no chance,

Do I need a different chain tool? Obviosly I do now because this ones broken). Do you have to remove one link at a time?

Anyone else found this problem or is it a case on gross incompetence?

I have a KMC on my hybrid and I used my donkey's years old faithful chain splitter. No trouble. Was your tool decent quality?

Sounds like the latter to me

I took a few links off my new chain without too much difficulty, can't see why you would need to do 1 link at a time.
