replacement bus service

On Merseytravel they're really good for bikes on the trains with no reservations!! BUT when it all goes pear shaped the cyclist is stuck as ARRIVA buses who have the rail replacement contract will not under any circumstances take bikes!! I've had many a argument, I've either had to ride it out which if its only local is not to bad. But occasionally its been one end of area to other which is 40-50 miles so its been a case of leave bike at home or friends etc and collect another time.

On First Capital Connect replacement busses I have had no success of getting on with a bike so always check engineering before going out and try to have a backup plan. Local double deckers used to take me and my bike from my nans to home (only a few miles rural and empty) when I was young.

What we needs is busses like in the states with bus racks on the front then we could use bikes on busses just like we use bikes on trains.

It's not only the USA, other Euro countries do it but UK law doesn't allow it.
I have found a polite request to the bus driver usually gets the bike on the bus when management is not looking. .
Not a satisfactory situation.

This mornings bus from Lytham to Preston carried a bike in the luggage space between the axles.

It was not mine.

Some coaches do have sufficient space for a bike in the under carriage. Whether the driver will allow it or not is a different matter.
