As long as I breathe, I attack.
Picking up a 20 "wheel kids bike from at the weekend.
Needs a new chainring as its bent and throwing the chain , now i am not sure if i cant just buy a new chainring or is it one that is welded onto the axle ?
If its replacement i am considering going square taper but what size BB would i need ?
Any advice and links to the right parts much appreciated

That looks like an American/BMX BB to me, I believe you can get an adaptor to convert to BSA BB threading but it'll be expensive to convert from the inside out pressed in shells.

EDIT I'll bet the pedals are 1/2" thread too not the usual 9/16".

Snap! Chain ring is integral to crank and looks like an Ashtabula type. I think trying to replace the BB and crankset would be disproportionately expensive. Pictured bike (above) has been grown out of ;) Read Sheldon. Looks like you can get a replacement ring (Sunlite Chainring 1Pc 44T 3/32 but maybe not from a UK seller) LBS enquiry?
