Sheldon advised that the easiest way to upgrade a 70s Raleigh with a 26tpi BB to cotterless is to keep the original BB but replace the spindle with a 7 series Japanese one.

But I'm guessing these spindles are now obsolete themselves.

There is this kit on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BANKRUPT-RALE...sure_cycling_bikeparts_SR?hash=item588263ba89

but the thread is 24tpi.

Obviously the cups won't fit, but can I assume that the spindle and maybe the races could be swapped if I keep my original cups and lockring? (I've asked the vendor but no response).

I've never pulled a BB apart before, but willing to learn.

Thanks
Liz

It shouldn't be a problem to get a bb axle to fit. We refurbish hundreds of bikes a year and rarely have any problems. There should be a number stamped on the axle - if you have that we can get you one.

I'd also replace the cups as they will be worn by now. Again they are available. See here http://www.cyclesofyesteryear.com/cycleshop/sparepart.htm

Wow - that's great! I thought all this stuff was unobtainable now.

I will definitely take you up on that, but it'll be a little while before I get back to you. I have to wait til it's warm enough outside to work on the bike again :becool:
