Hi
Just reading the Canarian weekly news, a disgruntled guest got a bit upset with people claiming sun beds at stupid o'clock in the morning by leaving their towels on them and then not using them for most of the day.
He decided to get his own back by throwing itching powder over the towels and then waited for the inevitable results.
It's a bit extreme but I can fully understand his frustration on the matter.
I've been there my self watching holiday makers sneaking to the poolside sun loungers at 5 in the morning to claim the best positioned beds to not being used until the afternoon.🤣
Oh the joys of the good old package holidays abroad

Any good hotel will police this. Especially as there have been court cases in Europe making travel companies pay compensation for beds being reserved.

We stopped in a very nice hotel in Barbados where people used books to try and reserve sun loungers. When I asked a member of staff he suggested I put all the books in the reception where guests could loan books. I did that and used the desired loungers, nothing said by the other guests, but it made us happy knowing we annoying someone.

Can you imagine being one of the sun bed hoggers. You arrive to your lounger, slap on the sun cream and then settle down on the laced itching powdered towel.
You would be sweaty and covered in sun cream and that powder would probably stick to you like poop to a blanket 😲

I'm glad to have never been on one of those holidays - not my idea a holiday to have struggles over sunbeds

Yes I'd rather be doing something/visiting somewhere.

I just don't 'get' it and the same goes for a beach - The last time I was on a beach, other than the rockpools, I was bored stupid, but had to wait for people, so couldn't leave.
I'd also forgotten my sunglasses, meaning I was half blinded (I have blue eyes so get dazzled easily), which didn't help! 🤦‍♂️🙄

Just back from Spain and saw this at our hotel. The pool opened at 9am and you'd see about 30 people waiting by the doors each day. As soon as they opened it was a fast jog to the loungers, towels spread to claim them then they'd wander back in for breakfast. There were notices saying hotel staff would remove such towels between 9-10 am but these were ignored.

Saw one couple who seemed to spend all day, every day just lying on loungers sunbathing. Each to their own but not my idea of a holiday.

Back in 1990's, before I knew this reserving malarky was a thing, I strolled down to the pool after breakfast, observed the sign that said no reserving etc, assumed the pool attended had laid out some of the provided hotel towels - you collected one from a little hut, on the "prime" sunbeds and myself and the former Mrs T settled in for a morning by the pool.

At least 2 hours later (this wasn't just a reserve before breakfast job) some German and his Mrs appeared at my side ranting away. I was generally confused. When I eventually worked out his gist, I merely pointed to the sign on the pool attendant hut and carried on reading and he had to go an collect another towel and settle himself in on the "cheap seats".

I've yet to not be able to find a sun-lounger when I want one at the places I've stayed, and I always want one in the shade in any event, which are often the ones left by the sun seekers. I wouldn't be adverse to making a little pile of belongings of stuff left on clearly abandoned loungers and claiming squatters rights if necessary. I'd probably leave the pile highly visible, but away from said lounger, and blame it on the hotel staff if challenged!!!

Thats a crime in most jurisdictions. Im not sure a sunbed is worth visiting the Midnight Express!

It's puerile nonsense behaviour anyway. I thank my lucky stars that I've never been a sun bunny and intend to never travel abroad again.
