This is the same problem faced in many established streets when a new building is proposed. While it would look horrid copying the original building (which only worked being a cube shape) you could have added on something that looked nice on its own. If you take his extension on its own it looked horrid. From three sides it was like the back of a block of garages.
While it is wrong to match you should at least put in something that has some merit in itself.
Also, sticking a long plain oblong next to an ornate square is wrong. They just dont go.
I have built an extension on a Victorian Chapel and have gone through this.
