Tell you what though: we've just started out the ''phase 1'' part of census collecting which means cycling around local streets, knocking on doors and talking to residents with cheery sun-induced smiles under blindingly blue skies. I could happily do this job all summer - I just found out that I've just accidentally worked 2 hours over my contracted time because it was so nice to be out today....

The biggest drawback is that, working in an urban area, all the addresses are too close together to get into a cycling rhythm.

Don't rush round each week. Remember you only get paid for hours worked. I am supposed to do 25 a week as an SE. I only had enough work for 6 hours this week and should manage to stretch next weeks to another 6.

I've no idea what an SE is  But I've got enough door-to-door work to keep me busy without being rushed. It's just that it was warm, I was wandering around an area I've known since childhood and being paid expenses for being outdoors on a bike! That doesn't happen very often. And I was regularly looking at the church clock to note down the time I'd visited but I was never ''clock watching,'' so that's how I accidentally worked too long - I hadn't got clearance to work more than my 25 hours but when I totted them up I found I had. It was simply a lovely day to be out and my only regret is that I couldn't get much cycling in.

This census collection seems like a good thing to be on. When's the next one?

The Nazis had trains too. Doesn't mean they (trains) are inherently evil.

For anyone with a vestige of interest in history / genealogy / archaeology censuses have been a massively useful resource. I'm sure you have found it useful Arch?

Anyone who has watched "who do you think you are?" - in my opinion one of the few interesting and thought provoking TV programmes, will have noticed that the censuses were they the key to unlocking the past.

As an example of the philistinism of the Govt, they plan to scrap it next time.

The census is benign and unthreatening - if a lot of people put Jedi as their religion down in 2001 - that was stupid - and a bit embarrassing, but that was a snapshot of the UK at the time.

It doesn't devalue the census.

The value outweighs the cost - and definitely the intrusiveness (which was nil in my case - and I fail to see how anyone could have found it so) - would make it a tragedy if we lost one of our most valuable historical resources because of the stupidness of Francis Maude.

I have done mine on foot as they were quite dense urban estates (houses and people!) but got a lovely rural round this afternoon which I will do on my bike.

When we get to phase 2 the houses should be further apart so may be more suited to the bike.

5 hours walking yesterday- proper bike ride this morning and out collecting on bike this afternoon. Should get my fitness up a bit.
