Revamp this ?

A very kind soul offered up this to anyone who could make use of it ....so I thought I’d take a project on and see how I could make this a bit better.....

What do you reckon could be done to this?

I always prefer to see very cheap Thumbshifters on a bike than say, very cheap gripshift. If they can go into friction mode rather than index - one click per gear, so much the better.

Brakes will be things to look at, both calipers and levers.

Clean and service it thoroughly then give it to someone who needs a bike to get to school, college or work.

Or just ride it!

Oh I forgot to mention, this is for the wife! She’s been after a bike of any kind and this came out of the blue so it will get ridden for sure.

Never mind the brakes (though agree - try those ones out yourself down a hill with a run-out),

Drill out the rivets holding the big chain ring on

Remove shifters and mechs

Fit 26 x 1.5 slick tyres

Remove the cassette and fit a single speed cog

New brake pads

Shorten chain

How’s ‘er indoors gonna get up the hills? I understand Angus is very hilly.

Looks like a bike produced for sale In supermarkets and in mail order catalogues, not something I’d want to inflict on my nearest and dearest but should be safe and rideable once you put some decent brakes on it.

She won't be going up any hills ! Just around the block with the kids, just a mess about bike really. And yes Angus is very hilly !

So, in other words make this a "non geared" bike ? as its just being used for circling a village?

It will circle the village fine with it’s current gearing but there are many advantages of having a single speed bike if you google them.
