Hi all,

I'm looking for some advice on changing a crankset. I've been riding an aluminium road bike for 2 1/2 years and want to upgrade to a full carbon bike. The best all round bike I can find for my budget is a Ribble Gran Fondo, and I am keen to go for the SRAM Rival groupset. However, with Bike Builder this grouppo only comes with 172.5mm cranksets, and only being a shorty I need a 170mm.

If I buy the bike from them, and get a 170mm Rival crankset myself, how easy is it to change the crankset over, and will doing this affect the performance of the bike in any way, or damage the frame in any way?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

easy to change with the right tools, no damage to frame, no effect on performance

will you really notice a difference of 2.5 mm ? I think not

I'm still trying to kid myself that I can feel an improvement after changing from 170 to 175 mm cranks

Ribble have plenty of 170 Black Chainsets in stock at the same price as the 172.5 - it can't be too much of a hassle to get one over to the bike builders so tell them you want a 170 or you will go elsewhere.

Thanks for all the advice - I did go back to Ribble to see if they would fit a 170mm crank but they said no, after all the poor reviews they seem to receive for customer service I decided to leave it with them.

Wiggle e-mailed me with details of clearance bikes and I've spent the £1500 on last year's Pinarello FP2 with Ultegra - with 172.5mm cranks! I agreed with your comments - 170mm to 172.5mm probably won't make any difference to me (I have a 31" inside leg btw), and there was no way I was going to let a bargain like that slip through my fingers for such a minor detail.

31" inside leg should be fine with 172.5mm cranks
