RidewithGPS on smartphone

I've been tooling around with RidewithGPS this morning and found a few routes that I'd like to try with the missus in tow. I like the fact that I can easily find routes that will be easier for her until her fitness builds.
I've sussed that if I select routes with cues I can get turn by turn instructions on the way round.
Is this practical using an iPhone, particularly with regard to the battery life?
If I turn off the display, will I still get audible instructions? If I can, I know the power consumption would be greatly reduced.

I switched a few months ago and ditched my garmin. I have iPhone 6 which has good battery. Get premium rwgps for nav. Plot riute in computer then download road on phone for offline. Make sure phone is fully charged and switch in airplane mode.

This morning I did 50 miles. At 35 when I stopped for 15 for sarnie I plugged in one of those Anker pocket chargers which I carry with me at all times on long rides. It charged from 45% to 60%. Back home phone still had 20%. If I were going further I'd plug it in at next stop.

Best decision I made as screen is so much clearer than garmin. You don't need to hear beeps it has count down to next cue and screen popups with beeps

Ps my screen is on at all times for map, pop up nav and metrics.

Do get one of those chargers. It's essential as you need a working phone if any difficulties. They're tiny and hold over a full charge worth so you can charge on the fly knowing you still have plenty in reserve.

Paying premium for the app is still way cheaper than buying a Garmin.

No problem. Final recommendation is the quad lock to secure phone with water resistant cover to stem/handlebar.

I don't have premium and the turn by turn works fine on my iPhone 6 Plus. I got a QuadLock as well, my Garmin Etrex 30 is up for sale aswell.

Edit: Scrap that, sorry I used Google Maps in Glasgow yesterday. The turn by turns in RWG is the premium version.

How would this work with running Strava at the same time? Yes the battery would take one heck of a beating. Typical of me, I can find my Anker anywhere at the minute.

RWGPS has a setting. Choose a ride. Top right are 3 vertical dots, choose Ride This/Not Yet (unless you are about to set off!).

Again, 3 dots top right gives you all sorts of options. Keep Screen On being one of them Navigation settings has lots more.

Finally, below the map has the various metrics (distance, speed etc). Press and hold any of them to bring up a list which you can scroll up.down and replace. I find Next Cue the most useful as it give a distance until the next time you need to worry about when you will be given directions.

Oh, and just to make sure, download route 1st and use phone in airplane mode.

I went out for a ride yesterday, following a local route saved from the database. It worked fine.
I didn't have the screen on continuous, only because I hadn't found the setting mentioned above, although audible prompts piped up when I needed to deviate.
Also as previously mentioned, I couldn't hear the audible prompts at any speed over 10mph.
Next time I'll have the screen on
Can you get prescription cycling glasses? I don't need them for distance, but I do for reading summat on my handlebars.
