Hi.
I was taking to a Polish work mate today about cycling and has was telling me about how serious the law comes down on cyclists if there caught drunk whilst riding a bicycle in Poland. He was saying a fair few cyclists have been given a custodial sentence for it and that they treat it as a serious offence. He was saying it was a very controversial topic over in Poland when you considered that if you got caught drink driving you would just get a ban and a fine.

Or you can bribe the copper and get let off, which is fairly common.

How do they determine if the cyclist is drunk? Breathalyser? Where is it that you can have >3 times as much alcohol in your breath/blood (compared with driving a motor vehicle) before you're deemed 'drunk in charge of a bicycle'?

This is not a spelling bee chat forum.

AFAIK, the law in Poland is not particularly harsh on cyclists who have consumed alcohol, but it treats them in the same way as it would motor vehicle drivers suspected of drink driving, which could come as a nasty shock for foreigners.

They don't have PACE, so any gob from you and you end up eating a knuckle sandwich, or getting a baton in the kidneys, or mysteriously falling down the stairs at the station. Now that comes as a shock to those used to the relatively genial British dibble.
