On my way home tonight a hackney taxi chopped me up to pick up a passenger from the kerb.

I slowed down, checked over my shoulder, saw there was a car coming so I stopped behind the cab. The car flashed his lights for me to go, but I'd already de-cliped so I waved him on. The car flashed again, so I urged him to go past with a wave and thumbs up.

He did so relectantly and pulled up beside me, wound the window down and screamed "you've got right of way, mate, you should have carried on, you're holding up the traffic"

I was lost for words.

I don't really care if I had 'right of way', there is no guarantee that a car coming from behind in the flow of traffic that its axiomatic that they'll give a cyclist the space and time to come out from behind the taxi.

Maybe I was too cautious?

You don't have a proper view of the road & are vulnerable, further more you're not obliged to take your priority if you feel that there may be a potential problem. Using a less vulnerable & more noticeable vehicle to 'path clear' for you makes sure that there is no one who will push through without you being able to see them.

To which your reply is "No, I'm not holding you up... the to$$er in front who just decided to cut me up to pick up a fare is the one holding you up. Thanks all the same though.":biggrin:
