Sandals on steroids, dreamt up by marketing men. Too big to slip into panniers, too elegant to get truly dirty and not really sturdy enough for anything but catching the train. I fear you've been conned.
I bought some of those whilst walking around the Lake District this summer, it seemed a good idea at the time with the sun shining, needless to say they have had precious little use in Manchester ^_^

I'm not so sure...

Those are practically "shoes". There's so little exposed foot I think it's a struggle to call them sandals. So now we're into the thorny issue of shoes with no socks. My view on this is that this is just about acceptable when in Mediterranean areas and the temperature is above 30 degrees. Otherwise it's as bad as socks with sandals
They're definitely sandals, albeit a sub-category, but I'm afraid you gave up your right to comment with the socks/sandals revelation.

Excuse me these toured Holland and Belgium last year on the bike, being a girlie I only have small feet and they have done a fair bit of paddling this summer here by my beach hut of a home so ner ner

Just to throw another spanner in the works where do we stand on Crocs?
Good for going out in the garden ... but don't step foot outside the front gate wearing them.... (mine are bright pink!!)

Oi! Don't encourage him!

The Scarborough ride is coming up and it's a tough one to call re footwear

Of course I need the cycling shoes for the ride itself. But I've got a fair bit of hanging around at Leeds Station. Then at the fish and chip in Scarborough. Then of course the evening shenanigans. So I need some additional footwear.

I'll be wearing socks for the ride of course. So if I wear flipflops at Leeds Station I'm risking the opprobrium of the beach foorwear mafia (for sure the photo will get wikileaked onto this thread). In Scarborough I can get changed into long trousers. So I really should wear proper shoes with those so as not to break the "no long trousers with beach footwear" regulation

I'm considering taking proper shoes with me for the evening. But at Leeds Station I'll have to either hobble around in cycling shoes or pop the evening shoes on with my cycling shorts and look a complete dick. I'm in a real quandary here

You should be OK if you've got SPDs.
