I've got one pair of (reserve) wheels which has large recesses for the spokes (which are reversed) and, unfortunately, the edges of the recesses are quite crisp. Velox doesn't tear, but it does stretch down on to the hole and, in consequence, come away from the edge of the rim. On these wheels I use two layers of rim tape - Velox against the rim and plastic over the top of that. The plastic doesn't stretch, so the combination give me a flat surface that doesn't tear.

Yep, got them on my lightest wheels (just Shimano RS80s), they made a small difference in overall weight (about 30g from memory) but the biggest benefit is that it makes tyre fitting and removal much easier.
They seem like a good idea, but they don't seem to have caught on: I can find references to them from 2006 but only Planet X seem to stock them and there's not much on the web from the usual sources.

How many miles have you put in on them?
