What aren't people as outraged about 1000's of rainforest trees being cut down daily? Lots of woodland being destroyed to build on?

Plenty are, and I do think the reaction has been a bit overblown, but I suppose isolated incidents like this have quite a dramatic effect which can lead people to consider issues like mass deforestation more seriously.

For sure a splitter doesn’t do anything you can’t do without one. Just a massive time and energy saver

Saves me on coughing up for gym membership

Seriously though, it's also having the space to put it when it's not in use, along with the initial outlay. I'm on solid fuel heating here (no mains gas, nowhere safe to put an oil tank) and so wood forms 90% of my fuel. I will use coal as well, when it's really cold. Don't think I didn't do a good analysis on whether it was worth it.

And yes, I also manage a few acres of woodland, so am often dealing with whole trees.

I feel like their defence spent most of their time with their heads in their hands.

Can you imagine that first conversation they had?

There's a video of you doing it that you filmed yourselves?

Yes.

And you're pleading not guilty?

Yes.

I think you should plead guilty straight away.

I'm going to say that he made me do it.

I don't think that's going to work, you should seriously consider pleading guilty.

No, I'm not changing my mind.

Right, well I'll do my best, but......

Far more people are outraged about that than about the Sycamore Gap tree. There are frequent protest, involving quite a few people.

But something ongoing is not as newsworthy as a one-off event, so it doesn't get the news coverage. And also that is local, while the rainforests are on the other side of the world.

Better just to say "I deny the allegation completely" and then answer all further questions with complete silence if you want to do your best to avoid being charged in the first place.
Complete silence being, of course, much better than answering questions with "no comment".

Saves time and breath.

"No comment" indicates your intention not to answer the question. Simply not answering achieves the same without effort of thought or body.

The first line of the caution is “you have the right to remain silent” but then it ends “do you understand?”. I assume your right to silence is effective immediately and there’s no obligation to answer the first question you are asked after being read your rights?

I burn wood to feed my heating, and looked into getting a log splitter a while back. And didn't buy one because I couldn't justify it. If your wood isn't over knotty, a log maul will split that readily enough.

The bigger pieces, I will saw in half (along the grain) which renders them split-able.

If nothing else, it's good exercise.

And by the time you've split all the logs you're so warm you don't need the heating on.

They have missed a trick there...if they said it was the inaugural act of a 'just stop trees' movement highlighting deforestation, climate etc etc they would have a heap of followers calling them heroes
