RLJ - I have come full circle

When I first started commuting I was a regular RLJ-er. Didn't see the issue, saved me time, to hell with the world etc. etc.

On an early commute to work, I filtered slowly through a red light across a T junction when there was no traffic, only to be hailed a 't**t' by another cyclist who was waiting at the lights behind me (a lady, no less). I was somewhat put out, and didn't really understand why one cyclist would shout out like this at another cyclist (wasn't the real problem the cars?) This prompted me to join this forum and learn more about the perception of RLJ'ing. Over time, I realised that it didn't save quite as much time as I thought, and that being courteous to other road users was its own reward. But I never really minded if other people did it.

A few nights ago I was commuting home late with limited traffic, stopped at a set of lights with a cab alongside me (him going left, me right). There was no traffic around, the cab driver wound his window down and told me 'I was a rare sight, a cyclist stopped at a red light.' and that he 'respected me' for stopping. Felt pretty good about that.

And then this morning I pulled away from a t-junction to be confronted by a cyclist steaming through the red light to my right and having to swerve around me. 'W****r' was the phrase I used, not particularly under my breath, greeted with the response 'Oh f*** off, you kn*bhead'. Probably a fair comment, but I found it slightly entertaining that I'd come full circle and now had considered it acceptable to hand out verbal abuse to an RLJ-ing cyclist.

Not been cycling on the roads long but I have to admit I'd be petrified to take my chances going through a red light on my bike in case a very large truck was coming the other way

I had a similar ‘revelation’ and can honestly say I haven’t RLJed in over a year. I woke up to exactly that – it doesn’t save you any time. And it is rather selfish.

I only did it when I thought it was safe – but noticed that me taking that risk was unfair on other road users who would not be expecting me to be in the middle of a junction when it was their priority...

I'm trying. Still jump the occasional deserted pedestrian crossing.... Bigger question.... Is red light jumping increasing or decreasing amongst cyclists?

Since I re-started cycling 10 months ago, I've only RLJ'd once, no one else around, completely safe to go through but I still felt guilty doing it cos I knew it was wrong.

There were 3 of us cyclists at a junction this morning and the other 2 sailed through the red light. I pootled on when the light turned green to find them waiting at the next set of lights (that they couldnt RLJ) further up the road.

RLJ'ing doesn't get you anywhere any quicker, it just makes you look like an irresponsible ar$e and gives all cyclists a bad name.

So, I'm glad you've been converted ^_^

Whats the general feeling to RLJ at pedestrian crossings? Assuming that the crossing is clear, with no one waiting to cross? There are two sets of lights that I go through on my commute, both pedestrian crossings. Although I stop for every red light I see, I have been tempted to go through the red light if it is clear.

Nonsense. The proportion of cyclists who RLJ is really quite small, albeit annoyingly noticeable.

Well, it's just what I've viewed - every time I'm waiting at lights, there's at the very least 1 if not more cyclists RLJ'ing. I cycle every day to and from work through Central London and I appreciate this isn't representative of all cyclists throughout all of London but I don't believe this behaviour is isolated to just my route...

If there's a red light, the law says you have to stop at it (unless you or someone else is in danger from doing so).
