Depends what it is.........RLJ, Leaving lid up on wheelie bin, protesting peacefully in parliament square without applying for a licence, using led lights before legislation allowed them, etc then yes i think its ok.

Theft, child porn, criminal damage etc - no.
But even if i am wrong (unlikely) and RLJ is a 'crime' i do not consider the use of three officers to be a reasonable, proportionate or necessary response. I think their time would be better spent elsewhere.

It isn't harmless, because I know two cyclists injured because of RLJing w@nkers on bikes. It isn't harmless because I get abused by motorists for RLJers' transgressions, and that sucks.

Not much compared with stabbings or even motor vehicle RLJing, true, but it's still a crime that needs sorting.

And how many peds have been injured by RLJ cyclists ? On my short walk from the station this morning I saw 2 instances of peds having to get out of the way of cyclists who RLJ on ped crossings.

JadedSo it is OK to do something illegal if it doesn't kill people?

It should be compulsory just occasionally to do something illegal ( not necessarily rlj ) ... if it doesn`t hurt anyone else.

Go on you know you want to ;)

i see lots more cars and cyclists having to stop at my local junctions to not hit ped's that are crossing while the lights are green... or drunks crossing the road, they dont care who they stop, and thats why i aim for them on my bike- its the same philosophy- take the risk, get the punishment....

but i dont agree with RLJ'ing though.... for any vehicle, although i have done it on occasion as theres never any traffic to stop for one one of my old routes- well not at 5.30 AM anyhow...- the traffic lights have sensors, so why always on a timer??

hmmmm dan i dont think that will satisfy them on here............ you could have waited a couple of hours for a car to come along or you could have dismounted, walked through the junction/crossing and then got back on...

honestly some people!

I think stopping RLJers has a number of useful functions.

It is promoting road safety. We can argue about the number of peds knocked over until the cows come home, but this isn't just a case of other people harmed by RLJing, but the harm an RLJer may cause to themselves. Sure, it's safe 999 times out of 1000, but then just once a car leaves the other exit a bit quicker than usual...

Also, motorists do sometimes perceive cyclists as able to get away with whatever they want, cycling on pavements, the middle of the road, jumping queues, jumping lights. Some motorists get annoyed that while every little transgression they do is monitored by speed cameras, traffic cameras, traffic cops and the like... if the same is visibly true of other road users than it reinforces the idea that we are all equal.

Just my two penn'orth.
