No you're not. I am also 61 and used to ride steel bikes in my youth, then again in my twenties and more recently about 9 years ago as I fell out of love with mountain biking. At that time I had a 1990 Harry Hall in Columbus SLX and it beat me up like nothing else; even after 50 miles I would feel like I'd done a round in a boxing ring. When I found an almost new carbon Specialized Roubaix dumped in a river, took it to the Police and a month later got it back, it was a revelation in the comfort and the quality of the handling. I have no romantic attachment for those old steel bikes, same as I have no attachment for British Leyland cars of the 70s; they've had their time, they are old technology and new is definitely best. It's a pity the OP doesn't live here in the North West; I would invite hm to try one of my two carbon bikes, one built for long-distance comfort and the other for thrills, just to see the light dawning on his face.
