Hi all this might sound like a stupid question
Can you turn a road raceing bike into a flat bar sports - hybrid bike I know it's just a case of swapping bars and shifters as such but will it affect the the bike frame ? I've only seen this done the over way flat bars to drop bars!
As Ive seen a cube road bike (frame - forks) but wondered about turning it into a a fast sports bike?

Yes, you can.

Bars, shifters, brake levers and grips should sort it.

Not sure I'd buy a road bike and convert it, but if you must...
I built a flat-bar road bike. You need cantilever-compatible brake levers (not V-brake!!) and I used gripshifters. You can use a double road mech, as you only need index one position - the limit screw takes care of the inner stop. Get a shorter, more upright stem than for a road bike and you're pretty much there. A compact chainset, and a MTB cassette and rear mech will give you a good spread of gears - I used 50/34T chainset with a 12-32 cassette.
A single chainring with 7/8/9/10 speed rear is also doable, and pretty cheap.

i did it in reverse with a Giant Rapid.

bought the shifters and bars and everything worked fine, depends on the original componants and their compatability with the cross over.

could be a thread starter if you decide to try.

It was just a Thort as I'm having no look selling my bianchi road bike and lbs have offerd me a poor price considering I only borght it last year from them! I just don't get on with the drop down bars just don't feel comfortable on it and only use it to and from work.
But looking to buy a giant rapid or a Boardman hybrid!

Is it possible that you do not get on with the drops because you have them set up wrong, this is often the case. A fraction of adjustment here and there can make a huge difference, and for my compact drops made a massive difference in comfort and that was after 40 years of feeling the other styles were good.

The resale prices of road bikes with drop bars are sky high. Even the cheapest Bianchi drop bar road bike in good and new-ish condition shoould go for a good price. Most LBS do not deal in secondhand any more, so they do not want it.

Do a bit of research on Ebay then post it up on this forum
