Road/helmet impact.

Left work at about 7pm, I`d ridden about 1/2 mile of a ten mile homewards commute when I turned left at a junction doing about 15mph and my 4 month old SCR2 slid from under me and we ended up scattered across the road.
Luckily it was a traffic light junction and there was no traffic moving.
My query is that the helmet I was wearing is only four days old (Giro Stylus), and although it took a fair wallop and has scuff marks on it, should I look to replace it?
Not sure what the procedure should be after an impact with the road surface.

I managed to break two bones in my left hand, bend the lhs STI, and ruin an Endura Gridlock jacket as well as collecting assorted gravel rash. Managed to finish the journey home though.

This is my first `off` in nearly 3,000 miles and I figure I got away quite lightly but the question of replacing the helmet is the one I`m looking for advice on.
Thanks in advance.

According to the manufacturer yes; it's done its job.

they're designed to absorb the impact and split, instead of your skull absorbing the impact and splitting, it won't work properly next time

Yup - my head hit the tarmac with some force on Thurs - ended up with a slightly sore head (still now).

Helmet looks OK other than scuffs, but it was a big impact. New one on order.

TBH - if it's that new - you can get crash replacement for under a year old helmet - Giro certainly do it on at least some, if not all helmets within the first year. You might have to pay a small fee - check out the documentation !

Some of the US websites have reported that Giro and others have withdrawn the Crash Replacement Policies or revised them, This was after a number of false claims where people were using hammers or other methods to "simulate" a crash on otherwise good helmets to get a newer one.

I believe the present system with some this is a discount which can be achieved with careful internet shopping!

In the case of Giro... there is now a "fee" an Atmos for instance has a £50 fee.

You rode nine and a half miles with a broken hand?

I'd say yeah, you need a new helmet, think of it like an airbag, once it's been "used" it wont do much ever again. Unlike an airbag, it can look useable.

Thanks to all for advice.
Mrs merlin is more annoyed because she`s the one who brought me the helmet as a christmas prezzie.
Still, at least she knows it was money well spent at the time.

I`m now kitchen exempt over Christmas, so all`s well that ends well!

She saved your noggin for Christmas

At least she knows what to get you again this Christmas

Sounds like Mrs Merlin is a great lady and saved your life. I hope you reward her suitably for christmas

How exactly did you have your off? Going too fast for the conditions or ice/deisel on the road?

downfader, combination of diesel on the road and a damp air evening. Possibly tyres starting to loose traction as well. The frustrating thing was that I had ordered two new Conti GP4000s that same morning to try and prevent that type of accident happening.
As a bye, the Kenda Kontenders that were fitted as oe were the ones to be replaced and I have to say that I was impressed with them (call me easily pleased). Had no punctures in all those miles and they seemed to handle well right to the end.
New tyres turned up the following morning but I`m taking them to the lbs to be fitted and get the repairs to the bike priced up.
