I ride a lot of country lanes. The stretch I am most perplexed about is 2 miles of narrow, hilly winding road which is mostly centred by a solid white line. If I hug the left almost all cars pass fairly close while trying to stay within the white line. If I take a more natural secondary position it encourages more drivers to cross the white line while overtaking me, giving me more room, but a few drivers pass even closer as they seem to be desperate not to cross the white line. I don't feel riding in primary is an option as I'm far too slow in some sections and it would wind people up, and hold them up too much. Solutions?
- Find an alternative route
- Educate drivers better
- Put up with it
- Find a safer way to deal with it
- Other?
I believe the Highway Code says that drivers shouldn't cross the solid white line if overtaking a cyclist doing more than 10mph but everyone does. I think solution 1 may be the best. BTW at the moment I tend to ride it in a natural secondary position and move left a bit if being passed too close and then back to primary.
