I was cycling back from lunch with my son in the bike trailer on a quiet road in Ealing (Mattock Lane) around 1:30 today when a people carrier overtook *very* close whilst beeping. I shouted at the driver and he pulled up and started swearing at me, calling me a "little ****ing bitch" in front of his three young sons and getting very irate.

Fortunately, as he was getting out of the car the driver of a car in front got out, asked me if I was ok and started remonstrating with the guy...

Normally in a situation like that I'd get the number plate, take down all the details and phone the police, however with my son in the back I wanted to just get out of harm's way. A big thanks to the driver of the car in front but it does make me nervous about driving with the kids.

It's not that long ago when hauling a kiddy trailer or a tagalong was a cast-iron guarantee for incredibly (and sometimes embarrassingly) high standards of driving around you. Good on the guy in front - he didn't need to.

Why would you put your kid at risk in one of those, putting yourself out there is one thing, them trailer things should be kept for off road, canal paths were your child would be safe.

No criticism of the OP as its their choice, but I've always thought those trailers were a disaster waiting to happen

So are you saying children shouldn't be in trailers, ie trailers are somehow more dangerous than merely cycling, and if so, why? Or are you saying cycling is too dangerous to involve children in at all ?

I've ridden hundreds of miles with my two in a trailer and it's true people do tend to give you extra space and consideration. Everyone seems to wave at the kids and generally be accepting of the extra space required. But then again I don't hang about with them in it so I'm not holding them up too much. Saying that, I would never cycle with them on truly busy roads and I do stick to paths and pavements when I need to. Once had a police car give me an escort and stop traffic so we could get across a roundabout. OP don't give up on it as you're installing the correct values in your kids to exercise.

I would not have put any of my kids in one of them, cycling can be dangerous,

Where did i say children should not cycle.

You said cycling is dangerous, and that you wouldn't put your kids in a trailer.

I was wondering whether you meant that kids in trailers was especially dangerous or they shouldn't cycle / be on bikes at all.
