One of our engineers was a builder and driver of one of the more successful bots

The big question though must be about the technology and how the rules are written

With advances in electronics, motors, level of control and light robust materials this would be awhile new generation

Imagine a drone based robot that could evade ground based units, swoop down and lift them ... Then drop them to their destruction

... Or a ground based one with anti drone weaponry

This could be a whole new ball game

How about a swarm of mini flying bots? Or even an autonomous class.
There was an American program that was a bit later, that had humanoid style bots controlled by a sort or remote exo-skelton type thing the operator stood in. Sort of a high tech version of this

Any weapons had to stay attached to the robot, unless damaged.
