Rooting Android

I've updated my Galaxy S 3 with Samsung's corrupt 4.3 Android update and my phone is now nowhere near as good as it was.
I've been told to root it and was wondering if anyone in here has rooted their phone? If so any advice on pit falls and advantages would be very much appreciated.
I'm aware of the fact that I'll negate my warranty but I'm due an upgrade soon so I'm not too bothered.

I've got a rooted Google Nexus 4... All my phones in the past have been rooted. I root from new
I run a custom CyanogenMod rom

The advantages are it gives you full control over your device, you can remove network provider or phone company specific applications.
You can remove all the bloatware such as that horrible samsung interface, You can increase security

Down sides is get it wrong and your phone is bricked. You can open your phone to a whole new world of problems if you do not know how to lock it down.

You should not brick it though as a one click root is available.

I rooted my Samsung Galaxy Ace and can now do all manner of clever things with it. The actual rooting is fairly simple and shouldn't itself cause any problems as long as you use the correct files to start with. But do back everything up beforehand.

Yes the CyanogenMod ROM is free, you can get a number of different ROMs with different features.

What issues are you having? I really like the 4.3 update but found battery was draining fast. Anywhere 8-12% an hour in standby. Resolved the issue now but wondering what you didn't like about it.

If your looking at a custom rom, rather than just rooting a phone.
cyanogenmod rom is amazing. It runs no samsung bloatware interface.
Its pure unmolested Android, exceptionally fast, functional and configurable for your needs.

A word of warning if you're looking at custom ROMS (and from someone who's been installing custom ROMS since the HTC Touch came out), it's extremely and I mean extremely rare that you will get the same level of battery life from a custom rom that you do from a stock rom. This is largely due to most developers concentrating on speed and smoothness so often this is at the expense of battery life.

I've left my current phone (Note 3) as is but my previous phone (HTC One X) was always being flashed with new ROMS only to have stock flashed back on a week later.

I have tried Cyanogenmod and a few others before and wasn't that keen. Maybe didn't give them long enough. It also didn't help that I managed to super brick my S2 while messing.

Tried all sorts of fixes that I found online in terms of battery drain on my GS3. Eventually figured out it was Samsung's push services that were causing it. Disabled the push services and a couple of other Samsung bits of software and it is now back to using 1-2% of battery on standby.

Try disabling location history and location reporting in Google Now. It doesn't alter the fact that the app has access to your location but for some reason it helps with battery drain.

Also, and you've probably done this but some people miss it, if it has NFC turn it off.

I am not sure I want to root it, but Mr TF has the Nexus 5 with KitKat with no bloatware on and it is a thing of beauty. Why can't we get that???

Did have Nova launcher installed and that was pretty brilliant but It killed the battery so have now gone back to Touch wiz (bleugh)

I started using the Storybook today!!!

I don't mind TouchWiz although I'm going to have a look at the Google Now Launcher for a bit

Using Nova Launcher Prime here on my S3 for about 6 months with no problems.
