Wow - here's a blast from the past. She is still around sometimes, but minus the torch. She also seems to be running a little later in her dogwalking these days, as I now usually pass her walking down Riversdale Crescent on her way to the park.

Whoah, thread resurrection much!

I think all the people encouraging criminal damage to the lead and assault on the lady were naughty and irresponsible.

The question that should have been asked was what size was the dog, and was it bunnyhoppable?

Chapeau

And indeed, zombie thread....

Oops - forgive me, I usually steer away from this sort of on line chattery nonsense leaving it to my better half who seems to make it a full time occupation. Glad to have stirred up some fond memories for you all!! FOCWE

How did you come across the thread, tattiehowker? I've always wondered how such ancient threads often get accidentally revived.

Thread necromancy! I'll add that to my list of things to feel guilty about!
I'll come clean - I do cycle to work from Roseburn - on a nice day!
The thread was passed to me as I'm also in the Friends of Roseburn Park group. Concerns about speeding cyclists always come up at meetings with the Friends and also with the primary school. Hence the rather large slow cyclists signs on the path.
I know most folk are responsible and I'm sure postings encouraging various attack strategies on an elderly lady are meant in good humour but there are some folk who just tear through the park without thought to others. I know it's easy to just focus on getting to / from work and they probably just don't realise how threatened some feel.
Any suggestions as to how to encourage people to slow down in the park would be most welcome - I'd much rather explore this positively rather than cyclists v dog walkers! (though am thinking tag team wrestling at summer fair could be interesting)
Apologies for injecting a serious tone! Look forward to your ideas

In the 6 years I've been cycling through the park, I think I can genuinely say I've only seen about 4 reckless, speeding cyclists. When the signs went up, I was quite surprised as I'd never noticed there being a problem. I'd have thought the number of people letting their dogs mess the place up, and the teenage drinkers, were more of a concern as that's something I do see frequently.

However, that's digressing. Slowing down bikes? Speed bumps across the width of the path would work, though they'd become pretty slippery & lethal to cyclists and pedestrians in winter / wet weather. Or you could put a fence up the middle of the path and have one side for cyclists and the other for everyone else? I don't know - it's a hard one. Maybe just employ the torch-woman to be on permanent patrol (although she shone it in your face whether you were barely going fast enough to remain upright or not!)

of course your trusty XML-T6 retina burner in her face would neutralise that problem

Thanks for the suggestions! I personally haven't witnessed a problem but it comes up time again so must be something in it. Apparently the path is too narrow for lanes - am not sure I agree but so say the council. as you point out speed bumps are a hazard for some eg folks with zimmer type things though the plans for new flood defences include ramps at entrances to the height of the the new wall (6ft in places!). Loads of fun for the winter!
